Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe, but we are in the month of June. The end of the school year is fast approaching. What this generally means is a very distinct sense of urgency amongst parents, teachers and students. The sense of urgency may come from different places: daycare over the summer, finishing out curriculum and getting to the end of the school year, etc. Along with the sense of urgency, is a definite sense of excitement. The summer is a pretty exciting time and I am sure this summer will be no different.

I know it will be exciting here at DES. If you happen to be coming by for any reason this summer, you will see some areas of DES in a state of change. The lower grades bathrooms will be renovated  and the two 4th grade classrooms will be receiving new flooring along with new furniture. The trick to conducting renovation projects like these in a school is making sure the work is finished before school starts anew at the end of August.

Along with the facilities projects, teachers will be doing some professional development work next year to further prepare themselves for the students. Teachers will be continuing their work on their Know, Understand and Do documents as well as preparing for the new Lucy Calkins Writing program we will be instituting next year. If you have any questions about the program, the information can be found here: http://www.unitsofstudy.com/writing-grade-by-grade/ . I am truly excited about the Lucy Calkins writing program as it will allow teachers to teach writing in a consistent manner. What this means for students is clear and consistent instruction classroom to classroom and grade level to grade level. Very important.

I emailed you earlier this year about receiving funds back from school pictures and letting you know what we will be doing with the monies. After giving it some thought, we have decided to use it towards purchasing apps for the iPads. We received close to $500.00 so all of those funds will be used for apps and all students will have the opportunity to take advantage of the apps.

As we near the end of the school year, I wanted to remind everyone about the two concerts we are having this week. On Thursday we will have the K-3 choral concert. On Friday, we will have the 4-6 choral concert along with the strings and band concert. BOth of these concerts will start at 6:30. We know this is a change from how it was done last year and the beginning of this year, but we determined that it was difficult, especially for the younger students, to attend for the total length of the concert. The other concern was how late the concert was running and we wanted to be respectful of bedtimes.

I wanted to also remind you of the 6th grade Promotion Ceremony on Monday, June 15th. The ceremony will start at 6:30. It is sure to be a great time of celebration and reflection for a great bunch of students. I hope all of you enjoy the week and, as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or any of us in the office.

Sincerely,

Owen Harrington
