I am excited to share a new avenue of learning we have just uncovered at DES. Although many of you are already aware of the software, we have just begun experimenting, at the staff level, with Google Docs. The exciting aspect of Google Docs is multiple people can all be working on a document at the same time. We can create surveys and spreadsheets as well as websites and beyond. This website itself is a Google site. Although this is exciting at the staff level with the amount of collaboration that can be fostered with such a tool, can you imagine the doors it could open in a classroom? Students could be working together digitally. Students would have access to their school work at home via their home computer. Google Docs would also allow more interaction between home and school. Although we are not there yet, it is our hope to someday soon be unveiling Google Docs for students. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this is the cost: $0.00.

I had an opportunity last evening to wear a PTA member hat for my son’s school. It was a very surreal experience for me. When the time came to go around and volunteer for various tasks, for various reasons, I was unable to commit to many activities. I quickly saw how difficult it is for parents to volunteer their services on behalf of their children and their children’s school. Although I did find my way into a couple activities, I can honestly say it is a tight schedule. Therefore, I can’t thank all of you that volunteer your time enough. I know it can be a struggle and your time is valuable, so I have a greater appreciation for what you are doing and my hat’s off to you.

I hope this submission to the DES Principal’s Page finds you in great spirits since we are all entering into that exciting and stressful time of year… The holidays.  Not only can this be a stressful time for adults, but children as well. I wish you all the best during this time, but if your child is experiencing a higher stress level than normal due to the time of year, please let his or her teacher know so he or she can be cognizant of any changes and keep you informed.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. My desire is that you all have a great time celebrating the holiday with friends and family.

Sincerely,

Owen Harrington

Principal
