Hello DES Parents,
We wanted to expressly thank all the parents who attended the most recent PTO meeting. We cannot recall that many people attending any PTO meeting we have ever been to in any school. It is a testament to your support for your children and we commend you for it. We would challenge you to continue to attend every meeting you can as your support directly impacts your children’s education.
We have noticed at lunch recently that many of the students do not have a drink in their lunch box. This may be due to having recess before lunch. We would ask that students who have a lunch packed from home have two drinks in their lunch: one for snack and one for lunch. Students are also able to purchase milk from the school lunch program for $.50.
We wanted to remind everyone that Picture Day is September 19th. If you are a frequent volunteer to the school, consider getting your picture taken so you will have an ID and not have to always fill out a visitor pass. Pictures start first thing in the morning and will continue on until at least 12:40.
The book fair is in full swing! Thank you to all the PTO volunteers for all their hard work. It is easy to see how excited the students are in choosing their books. In conjunction with Open House, the book fair will be open and you will have the opportunity to peruse the selection and perhaps make a purchase.
Just a reminder that Open House will be held on September 16th from 6:00 to 7:00. Normally we do hold it until 7:30, but we wanted to respect bed times during the middle of the week as well as give parents ample time to get home from work. We will start the program in the community center with a brief introduction to the staff and then break out into two 20 minute sessions in which you will be able to visit classrooms. In each classroom, the classroom teacher will give a presentation about how the classroom is run and what the students will be learning throughout the year.
We conducted our first whole school fire drill yesterday. It went very well with a quick exit time. Just as important, all students and staff were accounted for in quick fashion. We will conduct another whole school fire drill very soon.
The school store will be opening on October 3rd. Students in 1st through 6th grade are welcome to participate. Students can visit the store during their snack time and most items are less than $1.00. Some items are in the $2.00 range. We have the school store to further enrich students’ math skills as they work through what their change will be and what bills or coins they should use to purchase an item. Thank you to the PTO for sponsoring the school store.
Old Home Day is tomorrow (September 13) in the town Common. Dunbarton Elementary School will have a booth this year and we will have informational items on hand from DES, Bow Memorial School and Bow High School. Please feel free to stop by and visit us. We will also have some DES personnel participating in the pie throwing booth. Again, feel free to stop by and visit.
Please let your child’s teacher know if there is a change in the regular routine of the day. Such as if you are bringing in items for a celebration, a change in dismissal time or type, or if there has been a significant event in your child’s life. The classroom teacher will be able to better meet your child’s needs whenever he or she is informed of these situations.
In closing, we would like to thank everyone involved for their coordination in making the town voting on Tuesday, September 9th run seamlessly. A special thank you to Fred Mullen (Town Moderator), Chief Sklut, Officer Joe Millioto and Officer Ralph McClellan. Thanks to the generosity and advice of these individuals, we were able to coordinate all of our efforts to make the day safe for students as well as provide a polling place for the town residents.
