Hello Parents,

The educational pace at DES is really starting to take off. We are very excited to see the engaged and focused student learning. It is clear to us that as we are (hard to believe) heading into the end of September, we will be cruising along until the Thanksgiving break. This is a great thing! We would suggest that as homework starts to become more regular, you create a schedule at home to create consistency in homework completion.

We wanted to thank all the visitors who came by the Dunbarton Elementary School booth at Old Home Day. We hope you found that the information available was helpful. We also wanted to thank all the parents of DES sixth graders that allowed their students to participate. The student volunteers were most helpful and informative to all the volunteers; especially when they were facilitating Mrs.McCormack’s gummy worm experiment.

We had a wonderful assembly for the students this past Tuesday. The title of the assembly was Young Author’s Day . To begin the day students and staff were entertained by the mime named Toma. Toma then instructed the students to write stories, which he would act out later on in the day. This was when the real magic happened! The students intently wrote creative and fun stories. When Toma acted them out, you could either hear a pin drop or roars of laughter. He certainly lit a spark for the students and the interactive nature of the assembly was spectacular.

Thank you to all the families who made it out for Open House on Tuesday night. We sincerely apologize for having to reschedule, but we wanted to make sure we were not competing with BMS for Open House attendance. We were glad to host you for the night and hope that you found it to be informative and helpful. Thank you as well to all of you that supported the Scholastic Book Fair and your child’s teacher by purchasing books for his or her classroom.

As you know, today is school picture day. The students all look great in their picture outfits and were excited to get their pictures taken. The day ran smoothly thanks to the help of our volunteer Chanti Berube. We have elected this year to have a composite class photo. This allows for all students to be included in the photo as opposed to having some students miss their group photo due to being absent that day. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Our calendar has become a live Google Calendar. No longer will the calendar be a copy that is uploaded to the website. Now Mrs. McKernan will be able to include events at a moment’s notice. With that said, please check the calendar as often as you can as events will be added as they occur. This calendar can be found on the left hand side under the title "Monthly Calendar". If you use Google Calendar, you can add these events directly to your calendar so you are always up to date with the goings-on at DES.

The Scholastic Book Fair ends today. We hope everyone that wanted to had the opportunity to participate in the book fair. Thank you to all the parent volunteers for manning the book fair and making it such a great experience for all the students. Your efforts are most appreciated!

The kindergarten class will be taking the first field trip of the year to Carter Hill Orchard on September 23rd. This is a great opportunity for the kindergarteners and is sure to be great fun for all.

S’mores Night will be held on October 3rd. This is a wonderful family event for students and parents alike to gather and enjoy one another’s company as well as some s’mores. Thank you to the PTO for organizing the event as well as Jeff Trexler and Fred Mullen for providing the firewood and overseeing the campfires.

The Harlem Wizards are coming to Bow! On Wednesday,October 22nd the Harlem Wizards will be playing against the Fighting Falcons. If you have not had the chance to see the Harlem Wizards play before and you like basketball, this is a great event. The Harlem Wizards are extremely talented and a complete joy to watch. Not only are they great basketball players, but they are also entertaining performers. This event is a fundraiser for the Stephen Cmar Scholarship Fund. We also want to mention that some of the players from the Fighting Falcons will be from the DES staff. Players will be announced at a later date.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher or the main office and we will be happy to help you in any way we can.

Sincerely,

Owen Harrington, Principal

Melissa Romein, Special Education Coordinator

Ginny Hast, School Nurse
