Dear Parents,

Thank you to all of you who came out this past Saturday to support the democratic process of the school budget hearing. As you may have heard, the budget did pass. This is very good news. In passing the budget, we are able to continue the improvement process we have initiated. Some highlights of the upcoming budget are two classrooms will receive new flooring and student furniture, we will be purchasing a new writing curriculum as well as receiving professional development to accompany the new program, we will be hiring a two-day-a-week math interventionist, and we will be purchasing windows laptops to replace the teachers aging macbooks. By making these changes, we will be better suited to meet the needs of 21st century learners as well as meeting the needs of our facility.

A refurbishing of the lower elementary bathrooms was also passed. There was an amendment to the warrant article that stipulates the labor for the refurbishment will be mostly volunteer labor. I would encourage you to volunteer your services if you are interested in participating. If so, please feel free to contact me so I can get your information to Jeff Trexler (school board member and project manager).

Monday marks the start of the Smarter Balanced testing at DES. All students in grades third through sixth will be participating in this assessment. The majority of the work will be done on the new Chromebooks. We did send home a letter that gave a brief overview of the assessment along with the schedule of the assessment. In the event you are interested in the format of the test, there are practice tests available. All students (in grades 3-6) at DES have taken practice tests in order to understand the dynamics of the test and learn how to take the test. If you would like to take a practice test,you can do so here: . The PTO book fair is back! Starting March 25th,students will be able to purchase books at school. The PTO book fair will continue until April 3rd. This is a great opportunity for students and families to purchase books and celebrate reading. Just so everyone is aware, the PTO movie night originally scheduled for tonight has been cancelled.
